Welcome to LoCoPOGS!
Loudoun County Parents of Gifted Students is an independent nonprofit organization that serves families with children who attend private, public or home schools in Loudoun County and who are gifted. We define "gifted" as children who experience asynchronous development, per The Columbus Group's definition below.
Our Mission: To support the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers by educating parents on how best to address the special needs of their children.
Our organization hosts parent education meetings which include expert presentations, panel discussions and peer-to-peer information sharing. Meetings are held in a variety of locations around Loudoun County. Social events for gifted children are also offered on an informal basis.
All LoCoPOGS meetings are free and open to all.
The Columbus Group's 1991 Definition of "Gifted".... Giftedness is asynchronous development in which advanced cognitive abilities and heightened intensity combine to create inner experiences and awareness that are qualitatively different from the norm. This asynchrony increases with higher intellectual capacity. The uniqueness of the gifted renders them particularly vulnerable and requires modifications in parenting, teaching and counseling in order for them to develop optimally.
